A Glimpse Beyond Photography
Blayne Taylor

Let me tell you the story about how I met Blayne Taylor.

I was looking for a photographer to take pictures at my wedding in 2009 and my good friend Dianna (yes...2 n's) recommended Blayne (who was going to photograph Dianna's sister's wedding).

I met with Blayne at her home and talked about her style, how she worked and which moments we wanted to capture "on film".

From that moment on I did not worry about my wedding photos. Blayne Taylor is the perfect combination of professional and friendly. She was easy to work with and really did a great job capturing our wedding day.

But don't take my word for it. Pictures speak louder than words.

Dear Blayne,

Now it’s time for Blayne Taylor's Answers!

1) Who is Blayne Taylor?

I am a very passionate person who truly wants to give back to the world. I am also a loving mother to a beautiful 3 year old girl, who brings more joy to me than I could ever imagine. I am 27 and have a lot of goals in life. A few of them is to publish a coffee table book, be a part of an art gallery showing, and bring a smile to the faces of my clients.

2) “A glimpse and Beyond”. Where did the inspiration for your company name come from?

The inspiration for my company name came from the way I view life. There is always something more, you just have to look a little bit beyond what is in front of our eyes. So take a step back and take a glimpse beyond the obvious.

3) How did you get started as a photographer? Has this been something you have always wanted to do?

I have always loved photography. My father started teaching me when I was very little. I have always viewed the world as if it were a picture. I have been quoted many times saying “that would be an amazing picture” while just being out and about.

I started taking on clients 2 years ago, but the birth of my daughter really made me want to strive for my dreams. My wonderful hubby to be was the one to purchase my camera and tell me that I was wasting my talent and I should go for my dream. He was also the one to secretly give a picture of mine in 2005 to the Calgary Herald for a submission when the huge flood hit Calgary. It ended up being the front page of the paper.

Once my equipment was purchased I began taking pictures of my daughter and her friends, so that caught on and I was booked for other families. Then I put an ad up that I would like to get into weddings and this summer I am booked solid. I have had a lot of support so far, and am very grateful.

4) How has Facebook/technology influenced your business?

Facebook has been phenomenal for my business. It has allowed me to showcase my work to all my friends and family, as well as, their friends and family. It also hosts my portfolio so there is a common place for new clients to view my previous work.

As for other technologies they have been a voice for me to get myself out there. I use kijiji a lot to advertise and I also have a blog that allows me to showcase my work to those that are not on Facebook. I love that I am working in the digital age, as I find it very easy to advertise and connect without putting a lot of money into it.

I still put a lot of time in but I love it so I don’t mind. Without these technologies I do not think I would be as booked up as I am now.

5) With a creative business -such as photography- and working from home, how do you balance “work” and “life”? Do you separate the two or have you been able to find a good balance?

I find a very good balance in life. I feel fortunate enough that I can stay at home with my daughter and still put time and energy into my business. I love what I do, so to me it is not really work in the traditional sense.

My daughter is a huge part of my work too as I take hundreds of pictures of her. She has also come along with me to some of my shoots and encourages the other children to smile more by simply poses as she normally would for me. I would not want my life to be any different right now. Working from home allows me to make my own schedule so I do not feel like I am torn away from my family life.

6) You offer many different photography services (Family, Children, Maternity, Grad, Head Shots, Portfolio, Engagement, Wedding and Special Events). Which is your favourite and why?

My favourite photography service is actually a tie between children and weddings. I love to photograph a child’s smile. I love to see them run around and capture them as just as they are. They truly give the best smile and laugh. I love to photograph weddings because I feel so honoured to be a part of someone’s special day.

To feel the love of the family and friends that are present. To capture the look the couple gives to each other as they say their vows and then to capture them after the ceremony is finished and they can breathe again.

There is something innocent about a newly married couple, almost where you can actually see what love is. A time when hope is restored to those that have had their hearts broken. To capture that as a photograph is special to me.

7) What is the most difficult thing or event to capture in a photo?

The most difficult thing to capture in a photo is guests at a wedding. There are 3 different types of guests, those that hide from the camera, those that are always smiling a big not so real smile when I come around and those that just scowl and end up looking like I have no right to photograph them.

I also think families are difficult to photograph, especially if there is more than one small child. To pose them means many tries at the same picture, and little ones tend to tire easily. They also get distracted easily so to get the one picture that makes you melt as a parent is difficult.

8) Do you prefer traditional film or digital photography? What type of camera do you use and which is your all time favourite?

I am a huge fan of the digital world. You can actually see what you are photographing and can make sure you have captured all that you want to before you leave. I use a Nikon D80 slr camera, with a 18-135 mm and a 50mm lens. I really love this camera and would say it is my favourite.

9) When do you use black and white photos instead of colour? Do you prefer one over the other?

I cannot stress how much I love black and white photography. I tend to chose that for my own personal pictures more than a colour picture. It gives drama to the picture, it gives it an elegance, and it can take a photo that you may normally write off as a bad photo and turn it into a stunning photo.

It’s hard to explain why I choose to make a photo black and white; when I look at it I just know it would be that much more if it were. For example if there is a person looking into the distance I would put that photo into black and white. It would give it a sense of depth, almost provoking you to think about what they are thinking.

10) Regarding your services, how can someone contact/contract you and what kind of experience can they expect if they do work with you?

To contact me you can email me at blaynetaylor(at)live.ca or you can message me over Facebook. What you will expect is a laid back experience with some guidance, but I will never be too pushy.

I am always smiling and I want to make sure I capture what you want, not necessarily what I want. You will find me to truly love what I do and I take my work very seriously. I feel rewarded when my clients are happy and their pictures bring emotion out in them. You will also notice that I am very quick with getting you the photo’s that I have taken.

11) Would you ever consider creating your own hard goods and selling them, or are you focusing solely on digital products?

I am focused on the digital side of my work right now, and have no plans to do anything further with any other products.

Is there anything else you would like to mention or let the world know about? This is your opportunity to promote your services or any other affiliations (charities etc) you have.

I would like to mention that I am about to be in the Photo Sensitive exhibit promoting cancer awareness.

I feel very strongly about helping out cancer charities and try to affiliate myself with that type of charity. In this exhibit I will have one photo showcased from shoot I did with a friend of mine who is currently going through treatment for cervical cancer. If you happen to be looking for a photographer in Calgary Alberta Canada, I highly recommend that you contact Blayne Taylor.
