Combining Two Sentences
by Tu Pham
(Houston, TX, Harris)
Hi Diana, It is very nice to be your student!
I want to combine two sentences into one. The two sentences are:
(1) The man was very kind.
(2) I talked to him yesterday.
These are my combinations:
* The man to whom I talked to yesterday was very kind.
This one is the best combination that you provided.
In what context are you saying this? Your structure is very formal. Another less formal option is:
The man who I spoke to yesturday, was very kind.
*
The man of whom I talked to yesterday was very kind. We don't say of whom, we use to whom.*
The man to whom I talked yesterday was very kind. You always have to say "to" following talk...talked to.
I hope that helps.
