Lesson 5: Telling Time

You want a free beginner English lesson and here is one about telling time.

Time. It is very important. What time is it? Look at your watch or a clock. What time is it now?

These are all ways of asking someone what time it is.

How would you answer?

It is One O'clock.(1:00)

It is two O'five OR it is five past two. (2:05)

It is twelve thirty five or thirty five past 12 ...after 12:30 (or any time later than half-past) we say...it is 25 to 1. (12:35)

It is three fifteen or a quarter past 3. (3:15)

It is five fifty or ten to 6. (5:50)

It is ten thirty or half past ten. (10:30)

Another question, regarding time is WHEN something happens.

Listen to the audio and answer the following questions.

When do I open the store?
When does my first customer arrive?
What does he leave?
When do I have lunch?
When does my friend visit me?
When do I close the store?

Answers

-I open the store AT 8am
-He arrives AT 8:10am
-He leaves at 8:30am
-I have lunch at 12:30am
-My friend visits at 4:25
-I close the store at 10pm.

When do I wake up in the morning?
When do I have breakfast?
When do I eat lunch?
When do I come home at night?
When do I brush my teeth?

Answers

I wake up at 8:00am.
I have breakfast at 8:35am.
I eat lunch at 3:00pm.
I come home at 8:00 at night.
I brush my teeth at about 11:30pm.
