Memories

by Gloria
(Holly Hill, S.C. USA)

Can one forget? Memories are stored pictures, events, feelings, pain and laughter that we cannot erase. There are good memories and bad memories, and yet they are only memories.

I can remember the day I saw my first true love. My friend and I were strolling downtown on a hot sunny day. Suddenly a black car pulled up beside us and came coming to a squealing halt. Someone inside the car said, “Can I give you a ride?” We looked to see who was talking. Steering Staring back from the car, was a handsome gentleman. I reluctantly said no, even though I really wanted so much to say yes.

Our relationship began from that day. He too was a student at South Carolina State University too. Our relationship lasted throughout my college years. We continue to keep in touch, even though we went our separate ways after graduation.

It is hard to write about something that is not pleasant. Do you just keep it in your head? I got married at the age of when I was twenty nine. I thought I would be an old maid. How bad can could that be? Sadly, my husband to be, was in the Navy and he began living with another woman prior to our marriage, but during our engagement. This really wounded me. He has had no contact with this woman since but I can’t let these thoughts go. I am still trying to forget.
Good memories, bad memories, they all give color to my life.
