"Striving for success without hard work is like trying to harvest where you haven't planted"
- David Bly

Have you ever read David Bly's quote about striving for success?

If you haven't, congratulations on discovering this great motivational quote!

I really like how it paints a vivid picture in your mind.  David uses the metaphor of a harvest to make you realize how important hard work is.

It makes me think about this website.  I have spend years working on it. Writing articles, learning html, adding videos and audio, creating products and establishing a newsletter.

Many people think I am crazy to work so hard on something that isn't my full time job but I see it differently.

This website is my future.  I am planting the seeds of success in these pages and working towards my dream of becoming a online business consultant (true story!).

No matter what you are doing, make sure that you are planting the right seeds and striving for success.  Planting grammar seeds, speaking seeds and confidence seeds is extremely important. Without those "seeds" of hard work, time and effort you wont be able to harvest your fluent English crop.

If you want another example, you can think about losing weight. Many people will look at healthy individuals and think “I wish I could look like that”.

The problem is that their actions don't demonstrate their desires. You probably will find them sitting on the couch doing nothing or maybe eating a snack wishing they could loose a couple of pounds.

Most people do not want to do the work required to reach a healthy weight. If you do nothing, you will not achieve anything. Life rewards action and this is true for learning English as well.

If you do not expose yourself to spoken English, listen to real English or read interesting English texts, you will not exercise your English "muscle".

How can you expect to speak English fluently and with confidence if you never practice?

It's like scuba diving, or riding a horse, or typing on the computer. These are all skills that need to be learned and practised. The first time you jump on a horse is going to be very different than after a year of riding.

I believe that this quote reminds us all that we need to make an effort in order to achieve what we desire.

Nothing comes for free...as my father always says.

My friend Travis likes this quote as well!

Not an Easy Ride
I've never heard of David Bly before but he knows what he is talking about. Who came up with the idea of "an easy ride" anyway? As my father used to tell …
