Teaching ESL to Large Groups

by Sayed
(Egypt)

Could you tell me how to teach ESL to a large class (32 students), where most of them are lagging behind? Thank you Diana.

Hi Sayed,

First of all I have to be honest when I say that I have never taught to a group that large. The largest class I have ever had is 14 students (...and I thought that was big).

I can not imagine trying to teach a group that size. You must be overwhelmed.

-How do you give each student individual attention?
-How do you stop to explain a concept to one student, when everyone else understands what you are studying?
-How can you get everyone involved?

I'm going to need more details from you Sayed.

How long are you classes? (An hour?)
What age are your students?
Are they choosing to be there or is this course a part of public education or for their job?

To help you properly, I need more details. (Just leave a comment below).

Here are some general ideas to help you improve in the mean time.

Try focusing on speaking or listening exercises to improve specific skills (skimming, scanning, summarization, debates, presentations etc).

2) Do role plays. Divide the class into 6 groups. Tell them what role play they are going to have to do...for example making complaints at the airport. Imagine a couple on a flight, a flight attendant...the check in clerk and then the manager. The aim of the role play is to incorporate several expressions or phrasal verbs etc into the role play (have slips of paper and hand them out to each group).

Then at the end of class you can have a vote/debate about which was the best role play (which group did the best) and explore the expressions and phrasal verbs that you looked at.

3) Check out a forum post I just made. Someone asked a similar question and there are a couple good ideas presented there. Oral ESL for Adults

Remember to leave me a comment below with additional information Sayed.

Looking forward to your information.
Diana
