What's the difference between airline accident and airline crash?
Hi! I'm a foreigner and have a problem with these words! when I saw the words "AIRLINE ACCIDENTS" in an American magazine and told my English teacher about it, she said we don't use "accident" but only "crash" for airplane. Is that so? pls help me!!!
Good question! Your English teacher is right. We would never say "airline crashes"; crashes are only used with planes.
If you want to refer specifically to the airline (like Air Canada) then you might say that Air Canada does not have a high rate of accidents or plane crashes.
Also accidents are more general. There could be a small fire on board the plane and that could be referred to as an accident (onboard accident) but it isn't a crash.
I would say that if you are referring to a specific plane hitting the ground, then use "plane crash" but if you are referring to the airline, "airline accidents" would be ok.
