Why Learn English Grammar?

by Julia
(bjh)

"Why do you need to learn grammar?" is a common question and one that has many answers for different people. Generally speaking we much learn grammar because it is the fundamental building blocks of a language. It tells us how to form our sentences correctly and how and when to use certain words or expressions.

That being said, you can learn a language without directly studying grammar in a book. You can learn grammar naturally as you listen and speak a language. Think about a baby. When they first learn how to speak, they are not referring to a grammar book. They use trial and error and are not afraid to make mistakes.

I think it is a good idea to review grammar when you don't understand something or you are unsure of how to express a certain idea in a certain way. Other than that, I encourage you to speak, listen and use English.

Please note though, that it is different if you are studying for an exam, as they will be asking you specific questions about grammar rules etc. If you are studying for an exam you will be forced to focus more on the grammar side of things.
