How do you seem more confident to others?

When you speak English you might be scared or self conscious but there are many things you can do to appear more confident than you really are.

Do you have any tricks or tips that work for you? I'd love to hear them, and I am sure that everyone else would like to hear how you do it too.

Looking forward to your suggestions.
Diana

How to seem more confidant to others
by: Sergio Rodrigues

Hi Diana,

I think there is no better way to seem more confident when speaking to a native than trying to overcome the fear of making mistakes and learn from them!

Listening
by: Adriano from Brazil

I believe that we have to listen as much podcast as we can , they are very usefull to us, mainly because you get some trick from of the natives english and so, you start to add the same vocabulary within your normal context or routine.
On my current job I keep talking to USA guys in most time and I always get myself to some mistakes, but I used to slap me back and force to say more and more correctly.
therefore, i guess is pretty normal speaking with some mistakes, most important is not slack quite off and miss attention all part time.

Shadowing
by: Sergio Rodrigues

What's your take about the so-called shadowing technique? Does is really help fluency or could cause more embarassament when the learner doesn't manage to keep the pace of the native speaker?

Completely agree
by: Clara

Hi Diana:
Congratulations for your blog and your newsletters!

Your advice regarding the fear of speaking in English is clearly useful.

When I have to speak in English with anyone better that me (not very difficult), the same image come to my mind: Do we laugh about any English speaker trying to be understandable in Spanish? Normally NO, when, to tell the true their pronuntation is awful and they do not speak perfectly, but they communicate!!! They are a lot much adventourous than us.

Speaking skills
by: Sergio Rodrigues

Hi Diane

Your advice about trying to speak fast couldn't be more useful. Some people - myself included, at first - confuse fluency with speed, and I think they are not related.

You mentioned President's speech. By coincidence, my role model is the current US President, Barack Obama, whose clarity, intonation and eloquence I consider an example of good speaking.

Therefore, even realizing it is a challenge task, I usually download some of his speeches, interviews, etc, and try to imitate him.
I know I have a long way to become a new Obama, but I thinks it is worth a try.

About English pronunciation
by: Marissa

Hi, Diana!
Yes, after lots of years of eagerly trying to improve my English, I feel I can give some tips about English pronunciation to Spaniards who are learning English.

Here's one:
When a Spaniard is trying to imitate how an English speaker speaks Spanish, we tend to exaggerate their pronunciation making hard t's, d's, b's and p's, don't we?

Ok then. DO THE SAME WHEN SPEAKING ENGLISH... IT REALLY WORKS!!

Welcome back!! :)
