How to Use the Term "Want"

I am totally confused whether or not to use the word "want" in some situations.

Like when I am speaking on the phone with my client and she says "I wanted to know mypassword". Actually, I haven't given her her password yet and she still needs it. Can she use that word as she still needs information from me?
