Indefinite and Possessive Pronouns

by Roland

I'm always a bit uncertain when I use an indefinite pronoun, what the correct corresponding possessive would be. As an example: "ONE should know, what THEIR task is at work".

Would this be correct?

Hi Roland, you are right! You would use "their" whenever you don't know if it is a man or a woman or who it is in general.

Examples:

  • One should keep their bag close to them when at the airport.

  • One shouldn't leave their car unlocked in the street.

  • Someone left their keys in the door.
