Learn English Video:
What am I saying??

My first Learn English video was on my homepage when I started this site in 2008 and I thought I would use it as my first English video lesson.

Some of you might have watched the video and maybe you didn't understand everything, so I wanted to explain it.

First, I would like you to watch the video again.

Take your time and listen to what I am saying. Stop and re-watch the video until you understand.

Watching the video without reading the transcript below will help you improve your listening comprehension.  If you still don't understand then look that the transcript for my learn English video below.

Hi!  I'm Diana and I'm the creator of Helping You Learn English dot com; and I just wanted to take a minute to say hello and to welcome you to my website.

Umm...I also wanted to take a minute, to show you around the website.

So. If you look to the left, you'll see aaaa, a Nav Bar.

OK...so there you'll be able to find everything that is on the entire website.

So, for example if you would like to improve your writing skills, you would go to the left, and you would click on writing lessons.

And then you can fill out one of um.. my assignments and I will correct it for you for free.  Um...That is on a weekly basis.  Every Wednesday I add a new assignment.  So you can improve your writing skills um..weekly.

Um...now if you had a question.  If there's something that you don't understand about English or if you have a problem with something that you're learning, you can send me a question via the ASK ME button.

So if you click there, it'll take you to the page where you can actually send me a question and I will respond, right on the webpage.

Um...Basically um... take a look around and I hope you enjoy your visit to my website.

Um..Also, if you look down there is a green box which is the sign-up form for my monthly newsletter, which is really great because it's an easy way for you to know what is new and interesting on the website.

So, if you can take a minute, just go down and put in your name and email address and I will send you my monthly newsletter.

Um.. Every month into your e-mail.  And it includes links to new articles that I have written, um...new projects... for example AUDIO, will soon be on the website and um.. also some tips and free advice just for my newsletter subscribers.

So.. I think that is basically it.  SO…enjoy your visit to Helping You Learn English dot com.

Watching TV Series

If you enjoyed watching this video then I recommend that you look for more videos on learning English or TV series that you enjoy to keep watching and learning.

Try to find videos that you find interesting in your native language.

Forcing yourself to watch a TV series on law when you prefer medical dramas is a big mistake.

I suggest reading the transcript above for this "learn English video", as you listen to what I am saying.  It will help you connect the words with my accent and delivery of the words.

You will notice that when I speak (in a natural way) I say a couple of things many times. Look at how many times I say "um" or "so".

I say "um" 11 times! and I say "So" 6 times!
Why do I use these words? (Or in the case of "um", sounds?)

The reason why I use "um" is because I am giving my brain time to think and find what I want to say.  This can be a good thing but also can become a negative habit.

If you use "um" too much it can get very distracting, but used correctly, it can make you sound very natural. It also is a great way to buy time while you try and think of the word you want to say.

I also suggest just pausing when you are collecting your thoughts.  Adding silence in your conversations is a very positive thing.  Most people find it very difficult to do this, as they want to keep speaking to fill the silence but silence can be a great complement to your words.

Also, notice how I contract almost everything. It is very natural to contract, and this can make understanding spoken English difficult. Try to contract whenever possible and keep contractions in mind when you are listening to English.

This learn English video is good but MUSIC videos are great.
