Proper use of the preposition 'with'.

by David
(Toronto, Ontario Canada)

Is the word 'with' needed in the following sentence in order to show the relation between the subject and the object?

Providing your child with the tools to succeed.

vs.

Providing your child the tools to succeed.

I realize that some may suggest that neither of the above provide a complete sentence but my question pertains only to the word 'with' in context of what was written.

Proper use of the preposition 'with': Answer
by: Ola Zur

When you use the pattern PROVIDE + SOMETHING, you don't use "with."

Examples:

This medicine did not provide good results.

Jack always provides great tips and advice for us.

Will they provide protection for homeless?

When you use the pattern PROVIDE + SOMEONE, you use "with."

Examples:

He wants to provide his students with good books and workbooks.

I will provide you with everything you need.

Carla provided her children with plenty of love and care.

So regarding your example sentence, "Providing your child with the tools to succeed" is the right one.
