usage of close and nearby

by Kaede

Is it ok to say 'I sent Tom to a close grocery store to buy some milk.'?

Or should it be 'I sent Tom to a nearby grocery store to buy some milk.'?

Please tell me the differences between close and nearby and what situations I can use them in.

Thank you!
