Desire to become a effective speaker
by: Park

Hello sir,
This is Park from India. I am pursuing my masters degree, even though I am not good in English because I am come from a rural area.

While speak in English I make some mistakes, they are grammatical, wrong sentence forming and so on.

I speak English without knowing the grammatical rules. So please help me to improve my communication level, and what are all areas I have to concentrate on to improve my communication skills?

Could you please give me your valuable tips?

Spotless English
by: Robby Kukurs

Hi Wafaa,

There are two types of foreign English speakers I've had to deal with. The first category are the ones who speak fluent English but experience fluency issues every once in a while. The second category of foreigners are those who still have to come along in terms of overall English knowledge.

If you're among the latter - well, you have to keep learning so that over time you can achieve satisfactory level of spoken and written English.

And here's my advice on how to learn effectively:
1) Speak as much as you can - nothing can replace speaking practice when it comes to learning English!

2) Keep learning new English words and phrases on a daily basis! Any new expression/phrase/word combination you hear/read and that is worth memorizing (you shouldn't learn some obscure English words that are very rarely used) should go down in your notebook for later repetition and memorization;
* always learn new words as par of collocations http://englishharmony.com/use-english-collocations/
* always memorize them by speaking aloud so that you can USE them later on during conversations!

3) To learn effective writing:
* start keeping a simple diary on your PC - a couple paragraphs a day, no more needed;
* use SpellChecker to correct grammar/style mistakes
* best advice - write as YOU'D SPEAK! That's the biggest secret of fluent writing, you don't have to be the next Shakespeare! ;-) So basically when you write, keep whispering the text along, keep speaking with yourself.

If you keep writing regularly this way, your oral fluency will develop along with your writing skills and eventually you'll get there!

If you belong to the first category of foreigners who CAN speak English fluently but still struggle with it - here's what I have to say.

The first step towards achieving permanent fluency is admitting that making mistakes is NATURAL.

Yes, exactly, it's natural because:
1) everyone makes mistakes in all aspects of life;
2) even native English speakers make mistakes!

Of course you have to LEARN every time you make a mistake. Correct yourself after making one (there's nothing wrong with doing that during a conversation) and just keep speaking, speaking and speaking more!

Well, if your response is "But how do I know when I've made a mistake?" then you actually belong to the second category of foreign English speakers who haven't achieved fluent English speech yet. In this case - please refer to my advice earlier in this comment.

Regards,

Robby
