Struggling to Speak

by Mahesh
(Chennai,India)

Hi Robby,

I can write English well but then everything comes apart in the case of speaking. I find it difficult to speak fluently.

My tongue rolls and I cant speak with good grammar. For example, if I need to speak to a customer service agent my minds creates a list of points of what I should say to them.

But when I start speaking my tongue twists and I cant express the words that I was thinking about before.

I have such a big problem. What can I do to minimize this or fix it completely. Can you assist me?

Regards
Mahesh

How to Speak with Confidence
by: Diana Tower

Hi Mahesh,

Robby is currently unable to answer questions here, and I noticed that you never got an answer to your question.

Your situation is very common. You organize your thoughts and know what you want to say, but when faced with speaking you get stuck and struggle to express yourself.

This probably has more to do with how you feel about your English, than your speaking skills directly.

What exactly do you tell yourself about your English? Is your mind filled with self-doubt?

I can't speak English well.
No one will understand me.
I never speak properly.
This person will think I'm stupid.

The list goes on and on. The more I work with English learners, the more I realize that many of you are very insecure when it comes to speaking English with others.

Learners tend to think that others will judge them, think they are stupid or make fun of them. Really, most people could care less if you make a mistake or not.

I think the key is to eliminate these negative beliefs from your mind and practice more.

So, how do you eliminate these negative beliefs? One way is by tapping. I just discovered EFT (tapping) and it is a great way to work on releasing negative emotions and beliefs from your life.

I encourage you to Google it and learn more about it.

I hope that you will explore this tool and use it to improve your speaking.

All the best,
Diana Tower
