What do TOEFL,TESOL and FIRST CERTIFICATE refer to?

by Rodolfo
(Ecuador)

TOEFL,TESOL and FIRST CERTIFICATE. Are they the same? Or there is a difference among them. Thank you Diana in advance, for your reply.

Hi Rodlfo,
I can understand how you might get confused with all the different abbreviations or acronyms for different courses. I'll explain them to you.

TOEFL = Test of English as a Foreign Language.

TOEFL is accepted by most institutions as an English-language test to assess your level of English. You might take this test to enter an English speaking University for example.

TESOL = Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages

This is different from the first acronym because this is directed at teachers where as the first is a test for students. TESOL teaches teachers how to teach others English.

First Certificate (FCE)

FCE is an exam for people who can use everyday written and spoken English at an upper-intermediate level. It is an ideal exam for people who want to use English for work or study purposes.

I hope that helps clear up those acronyms Rodolfo.

Cheers,

Diana
